Summer is just around the corner (or already here, depending on who's watching the thermostat), and who doesn't love a good old-fashioned cookout to kick off the summer fun?
Cooking on the grill has been a staple of family get togethers, pool parties, and neighborhood soirees as long as anyone can remember. Some families even go as far as having grill competitions to see who will be crowned grill master of the year!
As the weather warms up, get out your favorite grill spatula, tongs, and spices, and get ready to sizzle with these delicious summer grill recipes!
The Ultimate Burger
The first thing most people think of when somebody mentions a grill is... you guessed it... a cheeseburger. To start off our list, we're not just bringing you any burger, we're bringing the Ultimate burger.
For this burger you'll need a sturdy bun that can handle all the flavorful ingredients, quality meat with lots of flavor (80/20 is what we recommend), a good sauce (try mixing things up with a spicy BBQ or sriracha sauce), and the right toppings. Some great ideas for toppings are:
- goat cheese
- a fried egg
- The traditional: ketchup, pickles, tomato, and lettuce.
When grilling the ultimate burger you'll want to make sure the temperature is on medium-high to high in order to ensure a nice evenly cooked patty. Before placing the burgers on the grill, pat them dry with a paper towel and season them with salt and a little garlic, and any other spices you may like. Once on the grill, you'll want to cook for about 3 minutes before the first flip, and then 4 minutes after you flip the patty.
The burger should be a nice golden brown with slight charring. If you're adding cheese, place the cheese on the patty at the 3 minute mark after you flip.
The Perfectly Grilled Steak
No summer is complete without grilled steak. When it comes to grilling a steak, almost everyone has a different opinion or recipe that they think is the best. We're here to prove them all wrong. (Just kidding! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the best steak.) The first step in grilling the perfect steak is picking out the right one at the grocery store or butcher. Check out this link for more info on the best cuts of steak for a cookout. Our suggestion is to use a NY strip or a rib-eye. Both of these cuts are nice and tender, and are packed with flavor.
Once you've picked out the steaks you want to grill, you should decide how you'd like to season them. You can either rub them with spices, use a marinade, or both. For this recipe we're just going to use kosher salt, garlic powder, and Longhorn Steakhouse steak rub. Pat the steaks dry about 15 minutes before placing on the grill and then rub salt, garlic powder, and steak rub into both sides of the meat. Make sure your grill is set to high and lay the steaks evenly on the rack and cook 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the steaks and continue grilling 3 to 5 minutes for medium-rare (an internal temperature of 135 degrees F), 5 to 7 minutes for medium (140 degrees F) or 8 to 10 minutes for medium-well (150 degrees F). Once desired temperature is achieved, remove steaks and let sit under tinfoil for 3-5 minutes before serving. There you have it, the perfect steak!
