Let's just start off by saying that all dogs are wonderful animals and whatever breed is your favorite that's great! However, there are certain characteristics that fit better in close quarters environment that is apartment living.
If you're considering bringing a furry friend home with you to your apartment, you should also be sure to check with your apartment management staff to see if there are any breeds that are off limits. Typically dog breeds that have a reputation for being more aggressive aren't allowed in most apartment complexes.
Without further ado, let's take a look at some of the best breeds of fur babies for apartment life!
The Shiba Inu is a fun small breed that resembles a fox. Most Shibas like to be independent and their attitude can easily be compared to that of a cat. These dogs are extremely smart and pick up on things very quickly. They love to go for walks and need to be walked regularly to get their energy out. The biggest drawback to owning a Shiba Inu is that they shed a lot twice per year. If you have some experience in dog ownership and don't mind the shedding, a Shiba Inu will make a wonderful apartment pet.
French Bulldogs check all the boxes when it comes to living in an apartment. They're very sociable, intelligent, and easy to train. They also bark very little, and have very low-maintenance coats. French Bulldogs love to be with their people. They'll snuggle, play, and always be happy as long you're around to take care of them. They also come in a wide variety of colors! The only problem you might have with a French Bulldog is their tendency to snore.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
These little guys are great dogs for individuals who may suffer from allergies. They barely shed their coat at all, and are an overall clean dog. While they have tons of energy and need to be taken on a lot of walks or played with to get their energy out, they are typically very calm and affectionate the vast majority of the time.
Another great apartment dog is the Boston Terrier. This breed is one of the most trainable breeds you can get, and their small size (rarely more than 25 Lbs), as well as the fact that they barely shed makes them perfect for apartment living. While they love hanging out with their owners and meeting new people, they also need a good amount of exercise so keep that in mind if you have a busy lifestyle.
While Corgis are a herding breed with a lot of energy, the short legged Corgis make great apartment dogs for owners who have the time to play. Corgis are extremely friendly and easy to train. They also get along great with other humans and dogs. If you have small children Corgis are a great option because they are gentle and loyal with a people pleasing attitude. Their short coats just need to be brushed every once in a while to keep them looking shiny and healthy.
The list of great apartment dogs could go on and on but the 5 dogs above are some of the best around! Let us know in the comments what your favorite breed is and why!
